It is silly to buy so much stuff, when I already have so much stuff! With the lovely Internet at the tips of our fingers, it is so easy to find projects and instructions so that we can create our own goods, or at least recreate and put to new life old stuff.
The two projects I started and finished this week:
1. Bleached Jeans
I started with a pair of jeans I got for free, that I never wear. They were dark jeans with lighter coloring in the thighs. I did not like the contrast of color so I never wore them...till recently! Check out my blog post a few posts ago for directions how to bleach.
I originally wanted to make them white, but after the 4th dunk, I was over waiting for them to turn. I also am not sure I could turn them completely white. Oh well. Now I would love to put some holes and tears in these jeans, so hopefully I will get to it next.
2. Hemp Milk
As we all know, I am an acupuncture student. This being said, I get weekly sessions at my school for a phenomenal cheap price. Due to hormones and the horrible options us women have for birth control, I have been subjected to awful acne for the past 6 months. When I take my chinese herbs, it helps. But because I am not the best at taking them all the time, I recently asked my acupuncturist what I should do in my diet to help me with this problem. She told me: NO SUGAR NO DAIRY. I have never limited my diet so this is quite a shock for me, especially the no sugar concept. Really I eat sugar daily.
So today is day 3. I already miss coffee. Not that I even have it more than twice a week, but the fact that I can't have it with my milk was very depressing. But now that I am a DIY girl, I thought about my options. There is soy milk, almond milk, rice milk and hemp milk. I originally was going to make almond milk, but I came across some shelled hemp seeds and decided to give it a go and make my hemp milk.
IT IS SO EASY!!! IT TASTES DELICIOUS!!
And its high in omega 3 and 6's, also very high in protein.
My recipe (that I got from a You Tube video)
1/2 cup of shelled hemp seeds
1 quart of water (4 cups)
2 tablespoons of agave
1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
First combine all the ingredients together in a blender or Vitamix. Blend on high for 1-2 min. Put through a sieve or strainer to separate the luscious milk from the green seeds gunk. Viola, Hemp milk. It is very good and nutty in flavor. I gave some to a dairy-free friend and she loved it! No stomach issues later as well!!
Because it is raw milk, I've read you must drink it within 3 days. No problem! Also the best part about Hemp milk, it takes about 30 min or less to create the finished product!
Some advice: Do not add hot coffee to hemp milk, it will curdle. Wait till coffee has cooled down, then combine.
