Sorrows are hard to deal with. I am not a proponent for alcoholism, I mean, I am not in anyway. However I do enjoy a good glass of the ol hoooch to "help me out" when times are down. There is nothing better than a little liquid happiness.
After a poor showing this weekend due to my "depression", I have been a bit in search of a drink to drown my sorrows in. Though I have yet to revisit those "college days", I do enjoy the good wine I have been having (at home with my family, because I live at home at the age of 27, don't judge!).
Tonight though, my mother got out the Campari and all of a sudden it's cocktail hour!!
Did you know that is my favorite hour!!
Even though I love this hour, I was not sure what to do with this Campari. My only memories of drinking campari are when my father ordered this drink in Italy. It would come in a tall glass that was a bright red and filled with ice. I loooved the color, but when tasted it, blech. It was so bitter and gross I could never really get over it. This was also very disappointing because the color is so amazing. But now, my mother has changed this!
It turned into what I think is an adult version of my friend's drink, The Southwest Slanger. I think more due to the bright orange color of both drinks. Her version consists of Cactus Cooler and Vodka. Though a great combination, I always have a bad reaction the next day, so I am off them for life : (
My mothers version aka "the adult southwest slanger"
Fill glass with ice
2 part white wine
1 part campari
a squeeze of lime ( i like alot)
a splash of soda (i like just a splash)
It is delicious! Of course it all depends on what wine you have. I suggest a sweeter wine like a pinot grigio or sauvignon blanc.
I bet I could replace the wine with vodka to be more true to the original recipe. I will do so and in turn will tell you how it goes...
Enjoy and Have Fun (safe fun)!!
**the photo of the white wine is from Preston Vineyard up in Healdsburg. I personally love this wine, but did not use it in above's cocktail.
